We can choose courage, or we can choose comfort, but we can’t have both (usually)
“I want to be in the arena. I want to be brave with my life. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our asses kicked. We can choose courage, or we can choose comfort, but we can’t have both. Not at the same time.” – Brene Brown
CEOs, current leaders and aspiring leaders all have self-imposed barriers. The difference among them is the complexity of those barriers and each person’s capacity to have the COURAGE to face their own internal hurdles. Easier said than done, right?
What I’ve seen is that Executives usually recognize when they, or their teams, get “stuck”– they just don’t always know how to get “unstuck.” My most engaged and determined clients want to know what they don’t know. As a coach, I stay with my clients during the hard work of honest and BRAVE self-reflection, providing opportunities to design “tests” enabling them to break free of limiting assumptions and old behaviors that are no longer productive. This always takes courage and pushes teams out of their comfort zone. This is where personal and team transformation begins.
I want to to challenge you to discover if you can apply my perspective to your own life – right now! If you’re struggling with a barrier or conflict, and you have felt “stuck” about what to do about it, start to move beyond your comfort zone by asking yourself:
Is the pain of not doing anything worse than taking a small step in a new direction?
Can you imagine setting an aspiration for yourself, then giving yourself grace and compassion for both the steps you do take and the ones you don’t, knowing that you had good reasons for your choice?
If you’re ready to make big, transformative changes, can you see that those around you may not be ready? And can you give them the same degree of grace and compassion when they don’t achieve all of your expectations?
Of course, as a coach, if you don’t want to move through this process alone, I’m here to walk alongside you. The goal would be to help you discover your own brand of COURGEOUS AUTHENTICITY.
Have the courage, break out of the comfort, and amazing things will happen. And don’t forget one of my favorite movie quotes:
“You’ve always had the power, my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.” – Glinda the Good Witch.
